Barry "Bub" Shapiro

Barry “Bub” Shapiro was kind, patient, selfless, and our rock in stormy seas. Born May 16, 1940 in Brooklyn (Kings) New York (It was called “Kings” at that time!) Surviving are his wife Lynne, of Brea, California: Son Laine of Brea, California: Daughter Jacqueline Shapiro Montoya, her husband Estevan Montoya Jr., and grandsons Esteban III and Cruz Montoya of Chapelle, New Mexico: Sister Rhoda Shapiro Markowitz and her husband Theodore Markowitz, of Brea, California: Brother Sheldon Shapiro, of Medford, Oregon: Nephew Brian Markowitz and his wife Lynn of Fort Mojave, AZ, and Niece Melanie Markowitz Totenbier and her husband Joe of Allentown, Pennsylvania. He lived at 1563 Pitkin Ave until he was 17, when he went into the Air Force for 8 years. He was in Air and Sea Rescue as the Crew Chief on the rescue helicopter and finally completed his service time at Vandenberg Air Force Base. He travelled to Vietnam and Korea, flew in many different planes such as jets and the C-47 “Gooney Bird”. He left the service in 1967, moved back home with his mother to help her out and went to work for the United States Postal Service. He retired as the OSHA and Safety Compliance Manager in 2002. Not one to be idle, he then went to work for Best Buy for 10 years. (Hey, we wanted him to be part time at a place where we could get great discounts!) In 2012, he decided he was going to enjoy life without the clock running it and kick back with motorcycle riding, bowling, golf, and just enjoying life with the kids and soon-to-be grandsons. He excelled in everything he did, even an all-night old John Wayne movies marathon! Really though, he was an excellent bowler, shooter, motorcyclist, golfer, and gambler. When we settled into the house we got involved with the community. He was the President of Brea Toastmasters: He was the voting Precinct Inspector for decades when we had the election voting in our garage. That was back when we had to count the paper ballots! He was very involved with the Placentia PD K-9 Officers Foundation. Whatever organization we were involved in, he threw himself into it with a gusto that was amazing. His generosity was immeasurable. He’d give you the shirt off his back and throw in a pair of pants as well. He loved almost ALL food, especially Chinese, Mexican, and BBQ. He loved to cook and his BBQ and his lasagna were the best around. He enjoyed spending time with anyone and everyone, and everyone always fell in love with Bub. Please keep me, his son, his daughter, and his family in your prayers. He was too young to go and our lives will never be the same again. Bub was truly one of a kind; a wonderful man, father, grandfather, and my husband of 44 years and the bestest husband and friend I could ever ask for. Thank you for always being there for us, Bub. The viewing will be from 9 am until 10:45 am, and the memorial service will be held at 11 am, Tuesday January 30th 2024 at Memory Garden Memorial Park, 455 West Central Avenue, Brea, California. Rabbi Miriam Van Raltte will be officiating. The burial will be at 2:30 pm with full military honors at Riverside Memorial Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd, Riverside California 92518.
